Every year, an estimated 43.5 million adults in the U.S.—about 60% of them women—act as caregivers in some way to a loved one. Half the time, they’re taking care of one of their relatives, and most often it’s an aging parent or parent in-law. It’s a responsibility that won’t always be easy, but can it also be rewarding. Really. But before you jump (or are thrust) into the situation, it helps to know what to expect.
